IMARIKA KIJANA - A pathway out of Poverty for rural youth

Imarika Kijana is a youth entrepreneurship course creating new opportunities for youth aged 15 to 28 who have dropped out of school or have limited employment options.

The Imarika Kijana program harnesses the energy and drive of youth and creates economic opportunities as well as building skills and confidence.

“Before this training I didn’t see any importance in my life, all I was able to see is what other people say and do. Now I am selfmotivated and valued as a knowledgeable person in my community. Now I see challenges around me as opportunities.”
— Sayuni Msigala, 2019 Imarika Kijana participant

Why is the Imarika Kijana program needed?

Tanzania has one of the world’s largest young populations, and its young people are at the heart of its aspiration to become a middle income country by 2025.

The Tanzania education system gives students hopes of moving beyond low-level secondary education. But when they fail, the youth lose hope for their future.

With limited local employment opportunities, and a formal education which has not prepared them for enterprise, their options are limited to subsistence farming, subsistence businesses or casual labour.
