TechConnect Container: Bringing Digital literacy to Rural schools in Tanzania
In a transformative step toward digital inclusion for rural schools, Lyra’s amazing corporate partners Softcat and GreenSafe IT have sourced and refurbished IT equipment for 10 rural secondary schools, destined for the Dodoma region in Tanzania. The TechConnect Container is now being loaded onto a ship in the UK and will reach Tanzania early September.
The refurbished computers will give marginalised students in rural secondary schools access to digital tools and online resources for the first time in their lives. For many of them, it’s not just a computer screen—it’s a window to the world.
Beyond the hardware, the access to technology gives rural students an opportunity to envision a life beyond subsistence farming, opening career possibilities, and building confidence in young students to navigate an increasingly connected world.
“Technology is no longer a luxury—it’s a lifeline. Our young students are stepping into digital spaces that were once unimaginable. This container is the beginning,” said Maria Spink, Founder of Lyra in Africa.
This initiative is a powerful example of what cross-sector collaboration can achieve. Softcat, a leading UK-based IT infrastructure provider, supplied high-quality devices and equipment. GreenSafe IT, known for sustainable IT solutions, ensured the setup was environmentally responsible by refurbishing and repurposing devices that still have years of life left.
We’re proud to partner with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology MoEST) as a joint venture in using the Tech Connect IT equipment as the foundation for the Tech-Inclusive Education Program (TIE for short) that will be launched in both Dodoma and Zanzibar over the next few months.
We are very privileged to work with organisations who believe, like us, that every youth deserves access to opportunity, regardless of where he or she is born.
Stay tuned—more news about the TechConnect Container are on the way as we follow the journey to Dodoma!
